Never before have I watched the Presidential inauguration with the overwhelming feeling of "this is my President. He represents me." Many incredible moments... "Simple Gifts" with Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman, normally unshakable Obama giggling before his oath, Obama instantly erasing the memory of the awkward oath with a breath-taking address, Reverend Lowery ending the ceremony with a prayer and a smile, the Obama girls dancing during the parade, and watching Mr. President and First Lady Obama exude pure class during the Inaugural Ball. A beautiful family, a President of incredible depth, and a country I am finally excited to be a part of.
Truly, a new era has begun. Bitterly partisan arguments and finger-pointing seem archaic. The louder Fox News screams and shouts about Obama, the less they are heard. The reporters who throw tantrums about Timothy Geithner missed the boat. This is a time for action, and the blame game has never seemed quite so petty.
Guantanamo closed. Stem cell research legalized. Missiles sent into Pakistan. An enormous stimulus bill. Obama has been President for less than one week and already things are happening. What a time we live in!

Media Responsibility
Follow the trend, it's the cool thing to do. Hence, blogging.
Some thoughts:
Gay marriage: will be legalized, without doubt, in my lifetime. It's inevitable. I could make a million arguments for why this is a good thing, but it almost doesn't matter. The future is more accepting, not less. Gay marriage is the next logical step following interracial marriage.
Chicago: unique and a nice place to live in. People are nice here. It's no surprise to me that we helped produce Barack Obama. Don't let his eloquence and gentle kindness fool you. He is the product of a brutal local political system, and he's about to amaze you.
Conservative Media: really, really needs to stop the Obama-bashing and rumor-spreading. No, Obama is not an Arab or a Muslim. No, he is not friends with terrorists. No, he is not a socialist. The country is not about to descend into chaos. The United States will not turn into Venezuela (??). Obama will not take all your money and hand it out to the poor. There was no conspiracy; people did not vote for him simply because he is black. He does not support infanticide. Obama will not abolish the military. Barack Obama is not the next Adolf Hitler (I'm talking to you, Congressman Broun). He is not our dictator overlord (Michelle Malkin!).
The hatred and the mistrust frighten me. I think there should be consequences for the media personalities who are ignoring their vast influence and spewing these lies as if they will have no effect. It's grossly irresponsibile and an insult to the great honor of being a reporter.
The other day I watched Bill O'Reilly on the Daily Show. O'Reilly, sounding surprisingly calm and rational, stated that he was scared about what Obama would do as President because he has a limited track record. Basically, O'Reilly felt that Obama has done nothing in the past, so we have no way of predicting what he will do in the future.
Fine! That's okay. I think it's a stretch to call the man who's been swamped by the media for two full years a complete "unknown," but I can accept that argument. In some ways, Obama is less known than McCain or Hillary Clinton, for example.
But that's not what O'Reilly and others are saying on their news programs. They're talking about chaos and dead babies and terrorist attacks and economic meltdown and the general implosion of our entire country. People are listening to what you say. It does matter, and it does have an effect.
